Turnout for Sunday's eclipse the Gateway, Library Square, and especially the Sandy location was _extremely_ strong and we had many people ask if we were hosting similar events for the transit. We of course said yes. Clark Planetarium staff and telescopes will be at the Gateway next to the Olympic Fountain, and in Sandy at the Dimple Dell Recreation Center (106th So. 10th E.) from 4PM-sunset on 6/5 to offer the public free viewing of the transit. We could use a couple more telescopes and operators, especially at the Sandy location. I know a lot of folks here will be headed for the NHMU, which is a terrific spot to view the transit, but in case any of you folks would like to share the view with interested crowds at other locations we'd love to have you join us either at the Gateway or in Sandy. If you think you'd like to participate, please let me know. We've got an opportunity to capitalize on the momentum Sunday's eclipse created and get more of the public interested in astronomy. And btw, we're getting a large order of Aluminized Mylar solar viewing glasses delivered in time for the transit. They provide a color-free, very crisp image of the Sun which will be perfect for zero magnification transit viewing. I've experimented with taking a set of filters part and turning them into solar filters for 35mm and 50mm binoculars, and they work beautifully. Just use a bit of black vinyl electricians tape to cover any gaps between the filters and the objectives.
