This has been nagging the back of my brainstem for a couple of days, but I finally pinned it down.
I'm fairly sure that Earthly analogies of these little spheres have been found at sites like Pompeii & Herculaneum. Something about volcanic ash & torrential rain. That's about all I can recall at the moment, I'll do some research as time permits and pass on anything of value. If things rings a bell with another list member, please post what you remember.
