In 1979 the Hansen Planetarium, with some support from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, chartered a commercial jet for a flight to the Pacific Northwest to view a total eclipse of the Sun from the air. tickets were $200 each. The ground was overcast, and we were flying above the clouds. We could watch the Moon’s shadow approaching, and soon after that view the solar eclipse. It would be nice to have a similar eclipse flight for the 2017 solar eclipse.
