Model rocketry actually does have a bowling ball launch competition. Here's a club in Arizona that's having one soon http://www.ahpra.org/ follow the links to see the rules etc. Discovery Channel had a nice program on it a little over a year ago that showed one of the largest rocket launch competitions, known as LDRS (Large Dangerous Rockets) In it they showed the bowling ball launch, some of these guys were shooting bowling balls 2,000 ft into the air on ~$40 motors, sure is impressive, of course so is a Cessna 172 climbing to altitiude right? ;-) They also showed that Porta-Potty launch very impressive!! still climbed a little despite dragging two very large parachutes behind it. But seriously I've been out to launch rockets with these guys many times, and it's a fun time (could've said "it's a blast" but I resisted) I 'highly' recommend it, oops sorry couldn't resist that one. Don't touch that dial just yet. I am currently working out a plan to build a bowling ball launcher that will look like a big refractor. If we could house this in a building with a roll off roof, how cool would that be??? ;)

Makes you wonder what those guys could do with a bowling ball. ;-)
Perhaps you jest, but they did approach me about launching bowling balls.
They thought it would be cheaper until they found out I could drop one from a plane for ~$40. Their costs, as you noted, are considerably higher.
