Further update: The last confirmed beep from Spirit was yesterday
morning before 7 a.m., I gather. An orbiter also heard a transmission
I think later in the day but it contained no data and was cut short.
This morning JPL sent a command to Spirit, telling it to respond with
a beep if it got the signal. They THINK they got a response, which
would be very good news, but that needs to be confirmed. The
possibilities most under discussion are a software glitch or a power
failure. -- Joe
