To all my friends on this list serve: I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is a joy and an honor to be associated with all of you. Our passion for astronomy unites us (mostly, as long as no one brings up climate change!), and motivates us to educate and enlighten everyone around us. My wife and I leave September 1st of this year for 18 months to work at Moroni High School on the island of Tarawa, Republic of Kiribati. We'll be a few degrees above the equator and several degrees west of the international date line. Yes, I'm bringing a small telescope (Orion's 80 mm short tube refractor) and plan to become very familiar with the southern skies. Stan Martin and I finished our Summer Astronomy Camp Friday, June 6th with a marvelous star party. Our students brought their 6 inch f8 SkyQuest telescopes, and with moms, dads, siblings, and even grandparents, found Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, the Moon, the Ring Nebula, the Dumbell Nebula, and several other objects. The smiles and expressions of happiness and satisfaction made a perfect ending to my 13 year teaching career. I know you've all had that same experience, too. This email address will be good until around the end of July, at which time I'll have to change to my home email address: wasum1@msn.com. I wish everyone clear skies and happy observing. Our own Wayne Sumner is officially retired from a terrific teaching career. I would personally like to thank Wayne for devoting all those years to educating our young people and mentoring so many of them in science and astronomy. Wayne holds advance degrees and it's not common that we get such a top-notch accademic teaching in our high schools, especially considering he could have made a lot more money doing just about anything other than teaching. That's passion, folks, and a firm belief in doing what you think is right. He also deserves recognition for all the telescopes he and Brent Watson built and distributed to schools! Best wishes on your church assignment under those glorious southern skies, Wayne. We'll expect a full report on all the new objects you've become familiar with upon your return! I'm envious, it will be like suddenly moving to a far-away planet with a totally unfamiliar sky. I am blessed to have gotten to know Wayne, and privileged to be able to call him 'friend'. Thanks Wayne, enjoy all that retirement can bring. It's well-earned. _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy Send messages to the list to Utah-Astronomy@mailman.xmission.com The Utah-Astronomy mailing list is not affiliated with any astronomy club.
