Eric, I remember flying to a meeting in CA with 2 dozen Spudnuts for the inside sales people. They had not heard of them, so I took them as a treat. I can remember the young people carrying wire baskets with straps over their shoulders (not unlike the venders at a baseball game) and going door to door selling paper bags of the critters. I remember the plant, with its high tower of galvanized siding (or perhaps aluminum?) 73, lh On 11/9/2011 12:26 PM, erikhansen@thebluezone.net wrote:

I started working at the Beeline in 1964. I did not have a license at that time so I had to skateboard to work and my folks would pick me up in the evening. As I remember I had my first Tasco long before working at "Big Johns". I paid for my first telescope by selling Spudnuts! That would have been around 1960. If I remember correctly I made .05 per half dozen. Wow! I must have sold a bunch of Spudnuts. I can still remember that I could see the craters on the moon with the big eyepiece and NEVER EVER focused on anything with the "high power" eyepiece. Some things haven't changed eh?

What a great story! Dare I ask what year that was?

Nah, my first job was at "Big John's little Beeline" 3900 South just below 900 East. We regularly sold regular for $ 24.9 and when the gas wars happened (remember them) we dropped as low as $ 19.9 and you still got full service. Recaps in any size were $9.95 each mounted but if you purchased all four they were $39.95 mounted and balanced. I made $1.00 for each tire I mounted. I thought I was rich. Actually I was better off financially than most of my friends. Of course I still had to work all summer for a good telescope. ;)

When gas was 50 cents a gallon? Of Course, a bottomless cup of coffee was only $.05 anyway but I remember using these. http://www.sambosrestaurant.com/shopsam/product.php?productid=4 My wife worked at the shop on North Temple and 200 West for several years.
