There are are many nice pairs in Ursa Major. Among my favorite pairs are the Arp galaxies NGC 3718 and NGC 3729. There is a nice picture of the pair in the May 2005 Sky and Telescope, page 79. It looked good in my 15" and great in Jim's 25" scope last month. The Arp galaxy NGC 3738 and NGC 3756 is also a nice pair, although they are not Herschel objects. I spent some time in Ursa Major last June looking at all the galaxies in the bowl of the Big Dipper. I really like the little spiral galaxy NGC 3184 in Leo Minor too. It is a pretty easy starhop from Mu Ursa Majoris. Debbie

Hi all,
Four of us braved the cold Tuesday until frost crashed the party just after midnight. Transparency was so-so, the ground was perfectly dry, but the cold air brought very steady seeing, and the views of Jupiter's colorful festoons at 423x in the 16-inch (using my "new" $10 swap meet 6mm Celestron Ortho (thanks Patrick!)) were superb.
For me it was also a very productive night; I logged 34 more Herschel-400 objects, all galaxies (most of them in Leo Minor, Ursa Major and vicinity) save NGC 4361, a PNe in Corvus (central star was easy). Highlights were NGC 3294, 3432, 3813, 3877, 3675, 3726, 3198, 3184, and 3556 (aka M108). 7 of the log sketches show pairs of galaxies, not uncommon in this part of the sky.
The ground was nice and dry by the way, for any who might be wondering.
