Yep, passed several deer by the side of the road coming in and out, and swerved to avoid something else -- a hulking grey shape, a badger or racoon perhaps, fairly big. Mosquitos were also a minor nuisance; bring bug repellent. San Diego's my home town. Gotta drive at least an hour East to get any decent observing down there. At any rate, I've been a big fan of the quarry for the past several years. It's a really good 'cheap' site; only half hour from the east side of Salt Lake. As long as you don't look too far west, you'll do okay with respect to light pollution. Biggest problem is deer and elk on the ride home.

Actually quite a few showed up Saturday night, and the weather gods were obviously pretty mean-spiritied that night. The die-hard optimists among us even got rained on. I finally packed it up after midnight, as the total overcast would not go away.

Sigh. But the site seems pretty good; some small amount of light pollution in the West, but not bad; overall a great site for being less than an hour from SLC (it's about an hour from my house in Lindon in Utah County having to drive thru Heber). I'll definitely try it again.
