I was contacted and have volunteered on Friday, September 18th to go to the Grantsville Reservoir in Tooele Co. to set up my scope(s) and hold a star party for the BSA. The BSA that night are working on First Class advancements and their Astronomy Merit Badge.
I know this is a new moon, and I know that SLAS has its Capital Reef SP that weekend and I know that many reach out all the time and may be burned out, so if there is no interest, I understand. Can't hurt to ask though. So, if there are two or three other people that might want to go, and aren't traveling that weekend, and would like to meet me up there and show some objects from dusk til around 10:00p.m. they would appreciate it. After 10:00p.m.. or so I figure to do some of my own observing unless I have some leaders that want to view at that time. One, the district leader asked if I could show him M31. I'm taking up two scopes and a cooler of cold ice water and some hot chocolate and hot water.
If anyone might want to go to the event and volunteer, the district organizer offered a free meal (stew I believe) and a patch; just email me at JayLEads@ (or someone who has my email at SLAS please teach me how to find your email on this site and I can send you the info if you reply to this). Again, if no one wants to go, can't go etc., that is just fine also.
Here is the message on the "stew" so you know what your getting if you eat it. They are going to have dutch ovens set up and each trooper will bring in beef stew and pour in a can after taking out a can worth's from another dutch oven. They call it community stew so the contents change depending on what is put in. You also get a roll and butter but need to bring your own utensils and plate/bowl or camping cookware to eat on. Lights out for the Scouts is 10:00p.m. We are welcome to bring our own gear and camp up there and to also set up away from the scouts. There are no fires allowed because of the dryness. I can bring some light shields in case there is some light from the improved campground.
Cheers and Clear Skies and cooler weather soon?
Jay
