That's a great start to a nice tradition. ________________________________ From: "Hutchings, Mat (H USA)" <mat.hutchings@siemens.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, April 1, 2012 1:47 PM Subject: [Utah-astronomy] Outreach event in Herriman Following is a report on an outreach event that took place on Friday, 3/30/12, at the Herriman library: Jay and I set up around 7:00PM in the parking lot of the library and during that time we both expressed our expectations of a rather low turnout since this was the first event and didn't know how well the word got out. While we were setting up, a group of about 6 or 7 people walked by and Jay invited them to come back once it got dark. Well, they did, so we had that many people to start. Not long after, another group came and another and so I started feeling a little more hopeful that we might have a decent turnout after all. In the end, 20 people had signed my log book. I captured maybe half of the attendees, as I was just too busy showing people the incredible sights of the solar system (with even some DSO's tossed in), so show them all the book. So I estimate that we had around 35 to 40 people attend. That's not too bad for 2 guys with 3 telescopes and binos on a mount between them. There was a great deal of interest overall and we were able to show some of the more interested how to find objects with the telescopes and binos. One gentleman was very interested and may even join us at a dark sky session and perhaps even an ATM session. Of course there were several children that attended, and I made sure that they got ample eyepiece time. In the past, I have noticed that occasionally parents hurry their children so the next in line can take a look, but I always tell people, especially children, that when they are at the eyepiece, they "own" the scope and can take as much time as they like. We found out that in addition to the flyers Jay posted, the library had added us to it's calendar and that is how many of the attendees learned about the event. We could certainly use more telescope volunteers, so if any of you would like to join us in fair Herriman, mark April 27th on your calendars. Keep looking up!
