From the op-ed:
"NASA might be better served by encouraging the development of more useful aerospace technologies that can be put to immediate use." I'm not sure I agree with this point-of-view. When ideas are getting kicked around, nobody may know what an 'immediate use' could be. Does it make an idea less interesting then? It's all a part of 'basic research' - research just to see if something works. It could lead to other research, or and 'immediate use' or nothing for decades. Then someone else may pick it up and make something of it. It's hard to know when the destination is going to be when these sort of journeys are started. Thanks for the link, Patrick.
