Been there done that comes into mind.
The pause in manned US flight was planned long ago (before Obama), hardly the demise. I have yet to hear anyone explain how we can develop a moon base without a food and water supply. NASA still says they cannot launch enough food and water for the survival of astronauts to mars or sustain a moon base. The Constellation project was a mistake, sustaining ISS should have been the focus. We are a long way from the technology to put a man on Mars or sustaining a moon base. I've said many times that this country is the British Empire of the 21st
century.
We have only our divisive behavior to blame.
The sun shall rise again. If we can but lay aside blame and work together toward a common goal once again.
If not, then our opinion of ourselves was wrong and we deserve our fate.

I can't help but wonder if this is how many Brits must have felt as their domain over the oceans slowly eroded away.
In the end not a bad thing but it is hard to let go.

Yes, and the US no longer accomplishes this feat. It is left to others.

Seems like the USA had a similar mission in the 1960"s

Interesting to compare how their mission control sounds compared to NASA's.
