Jerry Foote is the better one to answer that question. But my guess is that with more stars to work with the more accurate the output data.

So far the only software I've used pretty much exclusively is the CCDSoft/TheSky combination I mentioned above. But there are many more out there that will do the same thing. Astronmetrica comes to mind as does MPO Canopus. Charlie Green and (I think) Kurt Fisher, both members of this list have done some minor planet work so perhaps they will post their thoughts. patrick
