You missed my point, Siegfried. Maybe I didn't express it clearly enough. What I meant to say is that we DO NOT restrict spending of club money based on contributions of anything. I never said you proposed an ALCON scope. I meant to say the thought that the club is somehow "subsidizing" someone who is not worthy of a subsidy (i.e., by renting a bus) is as silly as saying an ALCON scope should only be available for those who worked at ALCON and earned money for it -- otherwise they would be "subsidizing" the others. You're the one who brought up the argument against subsidizing and I was commenting on it. Of course we volunteer out of the wish to help others and not with the thought of getting anything else out of it. So you view the eclipse trip as a private party. But what if others view it as a club excursion? ________________________________ From: Siegfried Jachmann <siegfried@jachmann.org> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2012 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Eclipse Car Pool Joe, you are way off base. Where did I propose an "ALCON scope"? Don't presume to speak for me. Your rational is irrational. Chuck is right, volunteering is not compensated. Everytime I have "volunteered" at Bryce it has cost me hundreds of dollars. I view the eclipse trip as a private star party. We don't even reimburse gas for public star parties. Nobody reimburses the people going to the PIT. That is just as much a private party as this is. Nobody reimburses travel to and from SPOC. Are you suggesting that SLAS pay for all SLAS related travel? Should SLAS pay for my gas? ... let's see, 260 miles each way, 22 miles per gallon, 23+ gallons at $2.85. OK, that's about $67. You get SLAS to pay me that and I'm fine with it. Traditionally we have all paid our own way and I think it should remain that way. What about the people who worked for ALCON subsidizing the enjoyment of the others in SLAS by the donation we earned? How do we work that? Do you propose that we buy an "ALCON scope" that can only be used by those of us who volunteered time at ALCON? Siegfried can use it because he was there helping, but Patrick can't?

I don't think this is an appropriate expense for the astronomical society. The society shouldn't subsidize some member's travel expenses and not other's. Frankly it shouldn't subsidize any. The people on the bus should pay for the bus!

That's right, Chuck. Those who want a two-fer with the new moon down south wouldn't want to be on the bus. But I think Cory and other spouses who don't normally go on astronomical outings, might enjoy a group jaunt like this. Thanks, Joe

OK, I get you. This is a quick, one day outing, there and back. I was just thinking that since it will be New Moon, some people were planning on piggybacking some night-time observing from southern Utah, in the same trip, and kill two birds with one stone.

I don't think a lot of people will be photographing the eclipse; at least, when we went to the annular in New Mexico, it was largely a viewing experience. I had my 8-inch along and don't think I bothered to track. For something as short as a series of eclipse photos I don't think I would even need auxiliary power for my laptop, but would for my SBIG camera -- just one battery. Anyway, nobody has to go who doesn't want to. I just thought it would be a pleasant club outing. Thanks, Joe
