By the way, for your viewing pleasure I have uploaded a gif file of M1 showing the expansion of M1 over 30 years. There are 2 images, one taken in 1970 and the other in 2000. While M1 is not a White Dwarf the expansion of the nebula may lend itself to some of the discussion we have been having. If the luminosity were constant and I am not saying it is then one can imagine just by the expansion alone that luminosity would have to be spread out over a larger area.
