Dave, what's the anticipated timing on your purchase? I have always been skeptical of reviews, especially those by folks whose experience is limited to mostly commercial products. That's not to say that a review can't modify my interest level, but a review is really just an opinion, and nothing beats actually looking through the thing for yourself. I would, of course, use it on my "Weightless" mount. C. --- David L Bennett <dlbennett@mac.com> wrote:
Chuck, Debbie et. al.,
I'm planning to purchase one of the Orion ED 80's if all my current ebay/astromart dealings go as planned. I've been impressed so far with the impressions of those who have reviewed the ED on Cloudy Nights: http://www.cloudynights.com/reviews4/orion80.htm http://www.cloudynights.com/reviews4/orion80-2.htm
as well a the ratings on Excelsis.com:

I'll be sure to let you know if I do end up with one. I would be using it on my Bogen tripod/ 410 geared head as seen in the second Cloudy Nights review until I decide on something else (if needed...Goodrich liked the 410 but Wing Eng did not).

Hi Debbie:
I read the favorable review on cloudynights.com. This would be a good travel scope to take on a plane.
I read it too and it certainly does sound like the scope is a winner, especially at that price. I was hoping someone local had one and would be willing to show it off before I plunked down the cash.
BTW, I ordered a set of Orion's "Mag Wheel" focuser knobs...and wondered: If a stripe on your car makes it go faster, will these knobs make my scope "faster"? ;)
