Sky and I heard Kip Thorne speak in Utah, many years ago. It was at one of the universities -- maybe UVU? He spoke highly of his mother, talking about the way she was not allowed to teach at Utah State University because she was a woman, even though she was well qualified. He gave no indication that he was uncomfortable to be back in Utah. Sent from my iPhone

I'm going from memory here, but I seem to recall that Dr. Thorne was born into an LDS family, and as a young man broke away from the church, causing quite a bit of family distress. I think he ended up disowning the church and family members who thought he made a bad decision. You might have a tough row to hoe getting him back to Utah, but good luck- he would be an excellent guest speaker, for sure.
