The foil fencer must establish the right of way by displacing the opponent's weapon and pointing his/her weapon directly at the opponent's torso before attacking. Only by parrying the attack can the opponent retake the right-of-way. Unless the fencer has clearly obtained the right of way, a hit made without it halts the action but no points are scored.
