Are we talking about winter or summer? For winter,I like Anasazi Trailhead, Little Black Mountain Petroglyth area by the airport. I got eaten up my mosquitoes at Gunlock in the fall one year. Maybe it is better in the winter months than the warmer months. Ivins Reservoir isn't a bad site except there is no pit toilet like the Anasazi Trailhead just east of the Kayenta turnoff. I also found a spot off of highway 18 west of Dammeron Valley that I call the Upper Sand Cove Reservoir site. It was pretty dark there but it was a little chilly there at 4500 feet elevation. There was some dryed up cow dung but it did not bother anybody. Hope to go back there in February. In the summer I go north, out of the heat. Mountain Meadows isn't a bad site but if you want darker go to Enterprise Reservoir. You can also fish there if you want. I also like the Kolob Reservoir area for the summer. At 8000 feet, it is refreshing to cool down there in the summer. The Kolob Finger area is good although the north is a little light polluted from Cedar City. The St George light dome is to the southwest there. Cedar Breaks area is nice also but that is an overnight trip. I have heard that people from Cedar City set up near the radar towers in the summer months. Debbie On Sun, Dec 15, 2013 at 3:10 PM, Brent Watson <brentjwatson@yahoo.com>wrote:
The Mount Trumbull road is also a good spot. It can get pretty dark out there.
I know the sand you are talking about. I have always driven a 4WD vehicle, and so didn't really remember the obstacle.

I used to observe at the new airport site - before it was the new airport. I have also observed from the old fort east of town, or the dino footprints east of that. I am not talking about the museum in town, I am talking about Fort Pierce, and the dino tracks farther east..

Warner Canyon, entering from Hurricane not through St. George, has a lot of promise. Many places to pull off and set up.

The new St. George Astronomy Group is putting together a list and map of good places for locals and visitors to view the night sky. If you have some favorite places, we would like to add them to the list. You can see what we've got so far at https://sites.google.com/site/stgeorgeastronomygroup/viewing-locations.
