Hi Sheena, Welcome to Utah Astronomy, I've enjoyed reading your articles in the Trib over the last year or so. It's exciting that you'll be covering astronomy now. If you've been lurking on the list for awhile you'll notice that there are all types here, with two things in common, we're all a little nuts and very nice! As for me my interests in astronomy right now are very limited by time and $$ so I've been trying to develop imaging skills using very limited equipment that was never designed for what I want it to do, along the way I have to try and learn processing software that isn't always the easiest to use and then overcome feeling inadequate when I compare my images to those of the "masters" here on the list. I observe stricly for fun while many others have scientific studies, asteroid searches (Patrick Wiggins being very prolific in that area) Variable star observing, Photometry, Imaging - check out the gallery for all those, etc.. the list goes on and on. I hope you find fun and interesting things to do and write about public awareness is the key to astronomys growth. Don't forget to attend the star parties and ask us all lots of questions. Hi astronomers,
My name is Sheena McFarland and I am a reporter at The Salt Lake Tribune. While I cover state government, my favorite part of my beat is covering astronomy. I have been trying to find more events and especially issues and profiles to cover in regards to local astronomy and astronomers.
Late last week, I met with the Salt Lake Astronomical Society and found some great ideas to write about. I'd love to hear from any of you who have any ideas about astronomical topics you'd like to see covered in The Tribune. I'd love ideas ranging from telescope making to astro-imaging to any other idea that I don't know about. Feel free to self-promote, I don't know what a lot of you are up to, but it sounds like there are good things happening in Utah astronomy.
I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to reply to this post, or, if you prefer, you can contact me on my Tribune email at smcfarland@sltrib.com.
