Thanks, Jay -- Today I delivered my secondary to Steve Dodds, out in the Herriman vicinity, and he said it didn't look too bad. He may be finished re-aluminizing it in about two days. Meanwhile, my corrector plate is out and seems to be cleanable. I'll be getting the right stuff (good name for a movie, no?) to mix up the cleaning solution, so I should be back in business soon. I'm feeling better about the whole thing. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Jay Eads <jayleads@gmail.com> To: Utah-Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sun, March 21, 2010 4:26:58 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Saturday Observing Just got back from the Pit and the Pole and it was a wonderful evening. Nice clear skies, Antoniadi II (Slight quivering of the image with moments of calm lasting several seconds). In the later evening and into the early morning, just terrific. Open skies all around and humidity tonight never came into play . . . temp is 14 right now with 9 being the dew point at the Pit so right before sunrise dew might become an issue but no one is there as I was the last to leave. I bagged 12 Herschel 400's and sketched 7 of them (the other 5 weren't worth it) and saw about 10 other items. Not a bad night for me as I take my time observing, trying to bring out details and really studying my object. That 25 is HUGE I'll say that. Regardless of where, I hope a lot of people got out tonight, it was a fairly good night. Joe, I truly hope your scope makes it back into service for the next wanning crescent and new moon phase. If anyone is heading to Pit'N'Pole from the Tooele side, here are precise directions, made when I was returning from my Monday night-Tuesday morning disaster: Start counting miles from the Tooele city hall as you head south on Utah 36. At 27.1 miles from the city hall you'll be in Faust, a tiny farming community. On the right (west) of the highway is a marker for the Old Pony Express Trail; turn left onto the trail heading east. At 9.2 mies from that turnoff you'll come to a small road sign, like a mile marker, that says "PA 3." Turn right there onto a dirt road. After 0.3 miles make another right onto a side road. A short distance farther and you're at Pit'N'Pole, which features, of course, a pole and a pit. -- Joe
Some of us will be at Pit n Pole tonight (about 5 so far). One will have a new 25 inch Obsession Truss Dob out there that he'll be trying out for the first time. Watch out for dew if you come though as it may or may get frosty. Clear skies and good seeing to everyone though no matter where you may observe from tonight. Lakeside is really tempting with low humidity and very excellent skies.
Clear Sky clock shows high humidity until sundown and then it fading away for Camp Floyd (the nearest site on the list). This should make for a decent evening of observing.

Jay and Michael, my son, Sky, just read my blog and said I had "very kind" observing partners and Pit'N'Pole. He's right. -- Joe
Saturday's weather is looking clear. I am going to head out to a darker location one last time this month to either the Grantsville Reservoir which is not hitting high of humidity or out to Lakeside which is having lower humidity than Pit n Pole (Grantsville is the best of the two but has more LP). If anyone is interested in hooking up and observing let me know. Just respond here and we can meet up either at the location, or before and drive out together.
Just so you know according to the USNO site we'll have a waxing crescent moon until after midnight. Still, should make for some good viewing on some objects and I still have items to go after before the waxing moon begins to interfere.
