Seth, Did you know that SLAS wants to help out on your observance of Astronomy Day, April 20? For those who haven't visited yet, that might be a good time to volunteer. -- Joe ________________________________ From: Seth Jarvis <SJarvis@slco.org> To: 'Utah Astronomy' <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, March 29, 2013 1:59 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] City Weekly's Best of Utah Lists SLAS Star Parties Yes, it is Clark Planetarium's 10th anniversary, and we've got a special lecture by Phil Plait, "The Bad Astronomer" (www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy.html) on the actual date of our 10th anniversary, which is Thursday, April 11. If anyone on this list wants tickets to Plait's "Death from the Skies" lecture (about all the interesting and unusual ways the universe can try to kill you) I'll get them to you at the faculty/staff rate we're giving to the U of U, UVU, SLCC and WSU of $20. They're normally $30. All proceeds support the planetarium's education programs. Email me and I'll get you set up with tickets. And btw, if you've not "set foot in the place," you really should! I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I have never set foot in the place. I have nothing against it, but in the last 23 years I've only been in downtown SLC about a dozen times- for concerts mostly, most of those Jethro Tull. My free time is so scarce that a trip to the planetarium is just never on my radar when I get a day off. My stepdaughter was here for a visit in February, and she and her mom opted for the new natural history museum, Temple Square, and the GSL, over the planetarium. I was out-voted. The closest I ever came to the Clarke was when I ran a downtown 5k for charity in 2006, that passed right in front of the planetarium. That's about it! of course the perception by many is that SLAS is part of the planetarium.
but perhaps that is salt in old wounds.
LOL, I'm sure Seth would disagree about SLAS being the "only" option.
Only free option, perhaps.
But it's nice to get some good press!
