And we've really good odds of seeing aurora tonight - at least if we could see through the smoke. There are reports of bright aurora already in New York, Ohio, Iowa, etc. The current status map is here - http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast Jared On Thu, Sep 7, 2017 at 4:34 PM, Joe Bauman via Utah-Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:
I would go with the warning. You know the old saying, "Better safe than sorry."

I'm not sure what it is like in Ogden or SLC, but it is extremely smokey here in Cache Valley. Currently, the two sunspot groups are visible without magnification. I've been telling coworkers and others that they should still be using the solar glasses to observe the sunspots. But, there are a number of people I've spoken too that are looking at them "unfiltered" when the sun is somewhat low.
Am I right to warn them to only look at it with the glasses? Or with it being very smokey and the sun around 20 degrees or less, is enough UV and IR scattered so that this is okay to look at?
Clear skies (please), Dale. _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy
