Two nights at Capitol Reef were very good. The sky was clear both nights with a slight breeze and fairly mild temperatures. On Friday night, the seeing was not perfect with some turbulence apparent in the viewing. But the darkness was exceptional and the sky transparency was very good. Looking at objects near the zenith looked superb. On Saturday night, temperatures were fairly warm and until 1:00 AM there was no wind. The atmosphere was quite steady with a marked improvement over Friday night. I would say it was one of the best five nights I have ever had observing. Lowell had his 20-inch Obsession there and bumped up to 500 magnification with good views of the ring nebula showing the central star. When Jupiter first appeared above the hill to the east, it was fairly turbulent because of the heat waves associated with the hill. Within about ½ hour, the views improved and detail could be seen. No observer could see any sign of the meteor impact that occurred earlier in the week.
In attendance were David Bernson, Nate Goodman, Kevin and David Hayes, Rob Taylor, Lowell and Linda Lyon, Brittney ?, Ann and Christy House, Bill and Jackie Kennedy and Connie and I. Everyone had a very good time with some hiking and sightseeing in the day time and astronomy at night.
