Well, no matter what, it has wonderful spiral arms. Nice capture. On Thu, May 5, 2011 at 10:00 PM, Joe Bauman <josephmbauman@yahoo.com> wrote:
Thanks, Jay, gotta turn in -- will try it tomorrow! Best wishes, Joe

Joe,
Here are the galaxies around NGC 5033:
NGC 5005

NGC 5014

IC 4182

NGC 4914

NGC 4868

Those would be the candidates I would say are in the area of NGC 5033. Now if you were in a different part of the sky . . .
I'll also send you a screen capture I made of NGC 5112 and then turned the orientation to match yours and I think it matches nicely. I still lean heavily toward NGC 5112. Anyone else?

Humm, now I'm not so sure. Still confused. Thanks, Joe

Jay, I've been studying the info you gave us, and I'm convinced you're right. I believe it is NGC5112, which happens to be pretty close to 5033. Many thank, Joe

Joe,
Not positive but from the NGC/IC Project your image reminds me of NGC 5112:

I'm sure someone else will come along and let you know for sure which NGC you nailed. Nice bright bar though!

Well, this is a miserable first for me. I spent last night at Lakeside, as I mentioned (I'm wondering which part of the desert Michael was in, as I did not see him). My plan was to spend this night there too, after charging my batteries at home. But for the first time I can remember, I just ran out of steam. My Jeep is still packed but I'm not up to it for another night. This is a real sign that I'm getting old -- turned 65 in April.
I thought I was imaging NGC5033 this morning but the result doesn't look much like it. It certainly wouldn't be the first time I was off in aim. But I can't figure out what I saw. It almost looks like an S-shaped barred spiral with a supernova. Could anyone who knows how to do a plate solve let me know what it is, so I can hunt up a view of the galaxy and compare it? The stars around it should make it not so hard to do. It's somewhere in the vicinity of NGC5033. Anyway, I posted a view of it on the SLAS gallery, here:
