There’s something about being dissociated from the attack because of a glowing screen and a keyboard that makes it feel less real for the perpetrators. I’d just never heard of this one (so many go through unreported, that isn’t too surprising really). I think Bier is a really stand up guy for what he said in Goodyear’s defense. He didn’t have to do any of that. I won’t debate the merits of the CFAA, but just say that it was written well before most people had even heard of the Internet, and so it’s penalties spring from a time when the crimes were more difficult to carry out due to the barrier to entry for the ‘net. This was very serious and caused Astronomics (the owner of Cloudy Nights) a serious financial loss. It is to the owner's credit that he feels sorry for the perpetrator's family. It really was a form of cyber crime and the Feds take it seriously.
I'll answer most questions about it off-list if you want to email me, but what's in the press now covers it pretty well. Remember this was over 2 years ago, IIRC. He just got sentenced a few days ago.
