Way to go Brent, taking all the fun out of finding them. But seriously, that's a great map. Looks like several are an easy drive for my place. I may just head out this afternoon and see how many I can find. Thanks for posting, patrick On 26 Aug 2013, at 21:45, Brent Watson wrote:
I just got this from my brother:

It is an interactive map of the arrows around the west. There is one in Woods Cross! I need to go visit that one.

Patrick,
It would be good to post the lat/lon of the arrows you find.
That's my plan. But first I need to find them. :)
I did post that for the arrow above Lakepoint: 40° 42′ 16.11″ N 112° 15′ 12.50″ W
Coincidentally I was talking to my brother about this same topic. Funny how the same things travel the net at the same time. A couple of locations I am interested in are the beacon on the mountain to the north of Immigration Canyon, and the beacon northwest of the Spiral Jetty. I have flown over them both many times, and even hiked to the one north of Immigration canyon. I do not recall seeing any arrows at either location. The beacon northwest of the jetty is in much better shape. The beacon housing minus the lenses is still there, and the remains of the generator shack are still there as well.
This old aviation chart shows the one at Lakepoint as well as several others including one by Stockton: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwYwM1kmongFc3duTzlBbHdUa0E/edit?pli=1
BTW, did you know that Montana State still maintains the beacon system through the western mountains of Montana? They are charted and maintained operational. Some day I'd like to fly that system at night just to see what the old navigation was like.
Here's another oldie but goodie you can fly today:
