I've observed comet 17P Holmes naked eye, with binoculars, with a telescope and have seen pictures of it. Where is its tail?
I've seen many mention and pictures of Holmes on the web but no one has mentioned a tail (except to say they have not seen one).
On the Sky & Telescope site, they mention that the comet is nearly on the opposite side of earth from the sun, so the tail is pointing away from us (about 15 degrees off center). http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/home/10775326.html By the way, hi everyone, my name is Mike Thelen, and I'm new here. I've been meaning to send a little introduction email for a while but haven't sat down and done it. Been interested in astronomy all my life but only in the last year or so have started getting into it with any seriousness. I went to a star party at SPOC a few months ago and enjoyed it. Hopefully I'll be able to make it out more often. Nice to meet you all! -- Michael W Thelen Luck favors the prepared mind. -- Louis Pasteur
