OK, naive question here -- has anyone on the list hunted meteorite fragments in this area, or is it just too geologically heterogeneous to easily spot what might be fragments? At an impact site this size, where would one even begin to look for fragments? Could one conceivably drag some large magnets while walking, or use a metal detector to any advantage (assuming the impact was iron and not stone)? Clearly I don't know anything about hunting meteors; I'm just thinking out loud... ________________________________ From: Dave Gary <davegary@me.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, March 15, 2013 3:50 PM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Upheaval Dome (Utah) | Ground Perspective Thanks, Joe. As you can see it doesn’t look like much of an impact structure from the ground. Looking at Brent’s photo one can make the case that Upheaval Dome represents an impact event. For years it was speculated that Upheaval Dome represented a salt dome that was exposed through millions of years of erosion. Makes sense when you look at it from the ground. That’s just what the old-timer’s around Moab told me. I don’t know enough geology to make any type of informed judgement. I think Shoemaker saw the Dome from the air when he made his initial determination. I could be wrong on that, though. I haven’t looked any thing up on the web. I‘m just relating stories old uranium miners would tell me when I was a kid. They had some doozies as I recall. As one got older it made for good barroom banter. Brent,
Here’s the only photo I could find in my current iPhoto collection. Pretty poor. You can at least tell it’s Upheaval Dome. Looks like I need to back out there the next time I’m in Moab. http://www.flickr.com/photos/78046474@N06/8559745369/in/photostream
