Hi all, I saw where Chuck had a question about accessing the gallery. Now I have a problem too. I've been trying to upload a photo I took of Stardust's reentry but the gallery apparently won't take it. I took the picture at Wendover air base that night. In one small part, it shows ONLY Stardust's ion trail and not the much brighter glow from the heat shield. That happened strictly by accident. I put up my camera on my tripod to take longish exposure as Stardust streaked overhead. But I did not have the zoom set for a wide-angle view. When Stardust showed up, it was farther to my right than I had expected. So I decided to move the camera and started to grab it. But the reentry was fast and I realized I didn't have enough time to re-aim it. At that point I changed my mind and left it were it was, taking my chances. When it cleared the airfield's old control tower, the reentry did show up on a small part of my picture. Here's the interesting part. The streak from the glowing heat shield jiggled at first because my camera was still vibrating from my grabbing it. That jiggle threw the first part of the streak off its actual path. Then when the vibrations died down, the glow became a smooth line again, showing where Stardust moved across the sky as the exposure continued. That resulted in two images of Stardust's motion: the first shows the bright heat shield only, including the place on the right where the camera was jiggling -- that glow is in the wrong place because of the jiggle. But a second streak close to there shows only the glowing ion tail, which was fainter and required a longer time to register on the camera's chip. Because the exposure continued after the camera finished jiggling, soaking up photons from the still-glowing ion tail, it correctly shows the ion tail's path. This trail starts on the right at a place where the heat shield image doesn't appear because of the jiggle. Then the two trails merged into one line, when the vibrations died down. For a short distance, only the ion trail was exposed on part of Stardust's track. If I can, I'll post the image on the gallery. Meanwhile, if anyone would like to see it, drop me a note and I'll email it to you. Thanks, Joe
