In one meteor storm, I actually heard (or detected) many hisses coming from them. I agree that they must have been radio, rather than acoustic, waves, because I heard and saw them at the same time. I nearly convinced myself I was imagining them but I could "hear" one coming from my upper left, let's say, and turn my head in that direction and see it. I was alone in the southern Utah desert and maybe my isolation from urban distractions had something to to with my sensitivity. -- Joe ------------------------------ On Sat, Mar 23, 2013 1:00 PM MDT Chuck Hards wrote:
Tom, I'll look it up as time permits. The hissing isn't acoustic, IIRC, its your ear picking up radio emissions from the ionized gas of the meteor train. On Mar 23, 2013 12:42 PM, "Thomas Sevcik" <sfv1ts@hotmail.com> wrote:
Got word on this recent sightinhg/recording of a meteor over Maryland. Some 300 reports on it. One guy reports hearing a hissing sound which reminds me in my early years of stargazing in Kansas (1958 - 1969) of hearing two meteors on separate occassions. Never have heard that hissing from a meteor since. I do remember I had my doubts even before my first "hissing meteor" when I read about other observers reporting such an occurrance in a Sky & Telescope magazine I believe somewhen around 1959 - 1961. Wish I still had that issue.
