A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with one of our IS guys at work about this subject. He said that there is no software that catches absolutely everything. New malware and viruses are being written everyday, and about the best you can expect to catch is 80%. I personally don't know enough about this to evaluate the validity of his opinion. I've had very little virus problem on my own pc. I encounter spy and other malware more than anything. On 4/21/2011 9:54 AM, Fred Orrell wrote:

As mentioned AVG is a pretty good virus scanner, but it's not perfect. I haven't found anything that catches every single virus, spyware, adware or trojan.
I've had pretty good luck with Microsoft Security Essentials and its free.

MalwareBytes is a free spyware/adware removal program that I've used for several years. The free version doesn't run in the background, so it isn't taking up resources until called on. Make sure you keep it updated before running a scan.
Avoid installing multiple virus scanners at the same time or you will take a huge performance hit. I've repaired many PCs that are so bogged down, they can't even function. When their PC gets infected, they start installing everything to cure the problem. In fact, this usually compounds the problem. There are other tools available that are more involved to use.
Although you might lose recent program installs, you might consider rolling your PC back to an earlier date using Windows System Restore. Make sure an data files you have created since then are backed up externally.

Kim,
I'm not familiar with AVG. I use Avast for my antivirus needs on the windoze emulators I use on my MacBook Pro. I use ESET Cybersecurity on the MacBook. Avast has a free version (it's the only one I've ever used for my windoze stuff) and it seems to have a powerful engine under the scan function. It's picked up and disabled a few things from my emulators. It can't hurt to try it.

I'm not trying to be cheap but I just can't keep buying new software. I've been using AVG but obviously it isn't correcting this particular problem. I'll look into what you suggest - and thanks.

Get some other brand of anti malware software. Trend Micro Internet Security does both regular virus protection and malware protection.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm hesitant to use a site that immediately caused yet another explorer pop up with its own add as soon as I went to it. It also doesn't warn you that its use is not free until after you download a trial that only partly completes its task until telling you that you now have to buy the product. (I absolutely hate this kind of online deception. HATE IT!) Other suggestions?

You almost certainly have some Adware (basically a virus that forces advertisements on you). I'd recommend downloading and running Ad-Aware -

0.html and/or IObit - http://download.cnet.com/IObit-Security-360/3000-8022_4-10967594.html
Chances are that it is IE that has been compromised, but there are some cases where add-ons or other compromises in Firefox can result in continual pop-ups. These programs should find and solve the problem.

I apologize for bothering this list, but I don't' know anyone else as knowledgeable as this group who might be able to help me. A few months ago I had to replace my computer and I have had a nagging problem with my newer computer that I never had with my old one. I'm sure it's just a setting somewhere. I use only Mozilla Firefox for all of my internet use, except email. I am constantly barraged with Explorer pop-up windows even when I'm using Firefox. I've tried disabling Explorer altogether, but without success. Setting Explorer's pop-up blocker to "high" just isn't working. How can I get rid of Bill Gates et. al. constant hacking into my internet use, especially from Mozilla? Any ideas would be appreciated.
