Michael was on the right track. By the time the beam hits the first mirror, it's probably yards across and the distended, expanded dot is probably invisible to the naked eye. A small mirror would only reflect a tiny percentage of that- now multiply the loss by every mirror in the train, and soon not even sensitive detectors could discern the laser.
