May I continue opening cans of worms/barrels of snakes 'til the day I move on to the next sphere of existence. Joe, I didn't understand that you were blasting SPOC. But since someone brought it up... (barrels and barrels of really BIG snakes)... Steve hit the proverbial nail on the head. When it became necessary to move the original Grim scope and dome SLAS debated whether or not to build a better observatory in Stansbury near the original site or to simply withdraw from that public venue and pursue a darker site for the use of club members. SLAS/we overwhelmingly voted to do the former and continue public outreach. That's precisely why we now have SPOC II, a wonderful, public-friendly, family-friendly, and even observing-friendly (especially given the convenience) observatory. Daniel, I recall that you once said that maybe SLAS didn't deserve any credit for the outreach that we do. I beg to differ. Our commitment to public education/outreach is only partially represented by the superb facilities that SLAS/we all pitched in to make a reality - facilities whose primary function is PUBLIC OUTREACH. Please, someone, name for me just one other astronomy club that has no endowment or outside source of income that does as much as SLAS. Please. (I've asked the same question for years but there have been no takers.) Put the lid back on that barrel... His posts in December about the mining brought numerous nasty posts and several people leaving the board. He missed it all with pneumonia. Now he brings up the rent a bus issue, with all its intendent nastiness and lost board members. It has now been extended to a new thread about SPOC with much nasty potentional in the offing. I nominate Kim Hyatt as the official "Can of Worms Opener." Kim - your job here is done. And I don't H8 SPOC, geez, give him a break he is almost 80 years old. Live long and prosper - FOREVER!!!
