Hi Dale, I don't think we're seeing two objects (for example, a split contrail) diverging and converging again. I think it's one object with its own reflection on the lens or a lens element. It looks like one when it is straight on, but at an angle you get a reflection that makes it look like two objects. Light refracting at different angles, as in a prism, makes the "two" objects seem to be different colors. So there's one object. The question is, what is it? Maybe a plane so far away that it looks like a blob? I can't say but it's sure interesting.
