Brent, we already sell science toys on Amazon. The volume on those items is good. I'll ask my store manager about what would be involved in carrying more telescope accessories online. Question for you folks: I suspect that our volume on specialty telescope accessories would be low and therefore our prices would be more like retail list price rather than the discounts offered by large online retailers. Would you still buy from us? It is an intriguing idea, though, and one worth exploring. Thanks, Seth Sent from my iPhone On May 22, 2012, at 6:25 PM, "Brent Watson" <brentjwatson@yahoo.com> wrote:
Have you considered opening an internet store?

Thousand Oaks - yep, that'd be a good choice.
I just got through answering another question about why we don't stock h-alpha filters or Coronado telescopes, and I think that answer applies here, too. In the age of the internet, knowledgeable amateur astronomers seeking specialized accessories for their telescopes almost always buy online and are willing to wait a couple of days for the UPS truck - they almost never come down here to talk to us about their accessories.
I wish we had the demand for the kind of full-service full-stocked telescope store you find in L.A., but the Salt Lake area market is just too small and the internet makes it so easy to get exactly to doo-dad you want at Amazon prices.

OK. Thanks, Seth. I am really looking for a glass filter. Right now it looks like I'll go with the Thousand Oaks filter.

Brent,
We could certainly order something for you, but we wouldn't have it here by June 5.
What will _will_ have here shortly (end of week) are large sheets of Baader solar filter. For not a lot of money I suspect you'd have no difficulty building a full-aperture filter for your telescope.

Seth,
I am going to purchase a full aperture glass solar filter for my refractor. I just called your gift shop and was told you do not sell them. I thought I remembered you mentioning that you did. I would needd one that fits on the outside or inside of a 10" O.D. tube with a 1/16" wall. I only need an 8" clear aperture. Do you have such a beast?
Thanks, Brent _______________________________________________ Utah-Astronomy mailing list http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/utah-astronomy
