Well, don't stare at the sun, regardless. Even when the smoke is dense enough to turn it deep red, I suspect it still can inflict eye damage. And that includes looking through a viewfinder. The wind shifted and the smoke is blowing north now. The GSL is completely covered with smoke. Leaving work this afternoon, as I got onto I-215 at the south end of the Legacy Parkway, the road was high enough to let me peek into the Tooele valley. It looks like it's filled with smoke.
I suspect the fire abated a bit over night thanks to the cooler temps, but as of 2:30 this afternoon, there is more smoke than ever.
We may get another deep red sun and moon tonight.
