If I zoomed in with my digital camera, would this be safe for my eyes since the sun is so close to the horizon? If I go to Lake Powell, I'll look for it. Debbie

Yes, I see them about one out of every four or five times I look. I don't seee them much in winter, but they are very common in spring, summer, and fall. I have shown the phenom to several neighbors, and they see them occasionally too.
I have seen it on the sunrise also, but you have to know where the sun is going to peek over the horizon. I have done it as I drive along the freeway in Salt Lake.

The green flash is seen more frequently over water, mostly because the horizon is low. But water is not a prerequisite. I have seen them right here in SLC.
Brent sees them not infrequently from the Bountiful east bench, over the GSL, right Brent?

Joe,
There is a picture of the Green Flash in the latest Sky and Telescope issue. That picture looked a lot clearer than mine. We had morning and evening fog that day. Maybe I'll try from Santa Barbara next summer. It was clearer there than Ventura/Oxnard.

Hi Deb, Just saw a picture of a green flash. But I can't remember which magazine! Probably S&T. -- Best wishes, Joe
