Is Betelgeuse's axis pointed at us? Is it of sufficient mass to release enough x-rays to wipe life on earth out? I've read that supernovae could have a negative effect on earth biology as far off as 3000 light years. Gamma Ray bursts would be deadly at much greater distance.
