Hi Barney PanSTARRS IS built on Haleakala already and is now being outfitted w/ computers and being calibrated. What hasn't arrived yet is the GigaPrime camera, this is a camera w/ 1.4 billion pixals. I've seen where the camera will be placed and the chip is about 14" square. The opposition on the Big Island is even more intense than here on Maui. Maui moved thru the process as PanSTARRS was built on a site that once housed the Lure lunar Observatory. The big tussle here on Maui now is over the ATST (Advanced Technology Solar Telescope) which will be the tallest structure on the peak at 136 ft. It's going to be a HUGE scope but also the most advanced and largest solar instrument on the planet. Mauna Kea is under constant battle w/ local groups protecting the mountain, I am for that too but I also like seeing astronomy advance. In Hawaii, battle is part of the process :^) Aloha Rob here's a link to the dedication http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/New_Hawaiian_Telescope_Dedicated_999.html
