Jay, I have to agree with you about observing with family. Nothing has meant as much to me as observing with my wife and/or my children. I love sharing my love of astronomy with kids at school star parties, with the general public at public star parties, doing "sidewalk" astronomy, and even observing with the old farts I've known from SLAS for years. However, nothing yet has topped doing all that with one or more of my kids. My youngest, who is now 12, is already talking about Bryce Canyon next year, saying that he "can't wait." It wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable for me without him, either. There's nothing better. Except for maybe a bowl of raspberries and cream. We got M31, 32, 110, the Double Cluster, NGC 457, Comet Hartley which I sketched, M27, M57, M22, the Lagoon and Trifed, Swan and Eagle Nebula; the Wild Duck Cluster and some NGC galaxies over in Pegasus that my son wanted a go at and he got. Of all the things I have done, am doing or will do with this hobby, nothing, and I mean nothing beats being out under the stars with my son running the scope and showing me stuff and talking. Seeing was okay, transparency not so good but the time was well spent.
