If we put NASA funding to a vote.... Well the result may not be favorable. NASA funding may be small percentage of the budget, but that is largely due to the size of the budget. That same amount could build a lot of infrastructure.
We have landed 4 rovers successfully on Mars. I believe 2 of them are
still operational. Let people believe what the will. If taxpayers don't like it, maybe they'll elect people to congress who will correct that situation.

I don't think it's so much of fanfare that they are doing something that we did 50 years ago, it's that we aren't still doing it.
