But one of my favorite spots is only an hour away. ________________________________ From: Chuck Hards <chuck.hards@gmail.com> To: Utah Astronomy <utah-astronomy@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, August 8, 2013 6:30 AM Subject: Re: [Utah-astronomy] Sheena's looking for star gazing spots I doubt you'd get more than a handful of people driving a couple of hours to a remote observing site based on a newspaper story. And, by and large, most amateur astronomers don't have to worry about the reason people would flock to a nude beach. I'm just sayin...there's a reason we aren't swimsuit models, folks. ;-) Dan has a point. Just move down the road a few miles. There's room for everyone. Sheena should definitely mention the National and State parks that have astronomy programs. Bryce, Great Basin, etc. Most of those would fall into the 5-hour category. Since the crowds there are big to begin with, there's no worry about the Great Unwashed spoiling anyone's own personal, private little corner. This might be a good opportunity for Jay to get some publicity for his big star-party in October. Mention that location. SLAS puts great effort into public outreach and I hear many members complaining about the greying of the hobby and lackluster numbers of new members. Seems to me that not cluing people in to the preferred observing sites is counterproductive and hypocritical to this argument. Or is astronomy from a grocery store parking lot good enough for most of the new people, while some of us, who can appreciate the activity on a much deeper level than they, have the dark sites to ourselves? (sarcasm) There. That should stir up some discussion. :D On Wed, Aug 7, 2013 at 11:35 PM, daniel turner <outwest112@yahoo.com> wrote:
Once the local paper in San Francisco ran an article about the best nude beaches in the bay area. Next day they were all crawling with looky-lews, shutterbugs, and horny 18 year old males.
Luckily there are way too many good dark sites in the west desert to be ruined by a single news story. If your favorite place is overrun by RV's and ATV's, just quietly sneak off a mile in any direction and you're all alone again.
