After waiting for hours for a break in the clouds, my wife & I went south a bit and wound up at a playground in Daybreak. We set up the Dob on the side of the road and was able to see the sun and Venus quite clearly with only sporadic clouds passing by. Most people drove by and just stared at us with that wide eyed what-do-you-think-your-doing look in their eyes. A science teacher from Lehi, Utah stopped by and asked if he and his wife could take a look. After explaining about SLAS, he indicated that he would like to approach the organization about requesting a star party at his school. Much bigger than I thought it would be. In fact, when the Sun first broke free of the clouds I was still westbound on I-80 and not wanting to stop I pulled out my welder's glass and glanced through it and was surprised at how easy Venus was to see. Funny but I came up on a car that had pulled off on the shoulder. When I went by the driver was using binoculars to look at the Sun through his windshield. Then when I stopped at exit 77 and started setting up a number of other cars stopped too. patrick On 05 Jun 2012, at 23:07, Siegfried Jachmann wrote:
My view also. We had just over 35 minutes of viewing until the Sun set into low clouds. I also expected Venus to be smaller, probably for the same reason.
The view was also better through a glass filter than through the solar glasses. I ended up giving away 80-90 pair.
