Searching the web I see he was a railroad cop while in SLC. Also a pilot. :) I mentioned this discussion to a reporter friend at channel 5. He said he's interested and will see about doing a story. BTW, I liked the movie. patrick On 21 Jul 2013, at 19:19, Joe Bauman wrote:
I read a lot of Burroughs and fantasized about Ms. Thoris too. I was hoping the movie would depict her as in the book. I also decided the movie had little to do with Burroughs, but I just gave in to it as a sc-fi film and enjoyed it. Did you know Burroughs wrote Maid of Mars when he was living in Salt Lake City? A friend and I once tried to find his home using the address in an ancient city directory (or some other document), and it wasn't there anymore. Its present location is covered with railroad tracks under the overpass on (I think) Fourth South. I don't remember exactly. SLC should have some monument to him.

I guess it wasn't Jane Austen.

And the joke comes from two things. One, and I'm not making this up, I saw a 'official movie tie-in book' on the last Jane Austen movie to be made, and there is an old Dork Tower comic with the protagonist overhearing some kids walking out if The Fellowship of the Ring wondering if they could read the novelization. I can't find the comic in the archives, but I'll keep looking.

I wish I could convey sarcasm in email.
Joe, when I was around 10 years old, my grandmother gave me my grandfather's collection of pulp fiction. Inside that box were most of what Burroughs wrote...Tarzan, Barsoom, and another set I forget.
I spent the next several years enjoying the exploits of The Lord of Greystoke, fantasized about Dejah Thoris, etc. I also enjoyed many other authors in that box (Zane Grey stands out). I still have most of the books.
When the movie came out, I enjoyed it for what it was, but it had very little to do with the source novel. The characterizations were off, the acting from Kitsch was pretty terrible, etc. and then when I heard the budget, I was astonished. It pretty much torpedoed my hopes for a good set of movies about Barsoom.

Is the "terrible" movie the one called John Carter on Mars? I enjoyed it. And it's hard to believe there's a novelization of it, since it was based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels written about 100 years ago. -- Joe

I knew what he was talking about. I read the novelization of that terrible movie from a few years ago. :)

Good one, Chuck, but I'll bet very few of our readers will know what you mean.
