Crotchety and antisocial attitude! Joe, those are my personal ideals you're talking about. Without crotchety and antisocial by my side I'd wither away and die.

I absolutely don't extend that concept or endorse that idea at all. I was dissing it. My point was that we SHOULD NOT restrict what we can use club funds for, based on how they got there. Siegfried said, "The society shouldn't subsidize some member's travel expenses and not other's. Frankly it shouldn't subsidize any. The people on the bus should pay for the bus!" My point is that club money should be spent for club enjoyment open to anyone in the group. What's wrong with that? SLAS members pay dues but then don't necessarily avail themselves of everything the club has to offer -- for example, someone skips a meeting when we have paid for a speaker's transportation. He is then subsidizing the others' enjoyment. So what? Anyway, such a crotchety, antisocial attitude that we should not have an enjoyable time together is enough to make someone drop out of SLAS.

What about the people who worked for ALCON subsidizing the enjoyment of the others in SLAS by the donation we earned? How do we work that? Do you propose that we buy an "ALCON scope" that can only be used by those of us who volunteered time at ALCON? Siegfried can use it because he was there helping, but Patrick can't?
Do you extend that concept to those who worked for the ZAP grants? Those who get donations for holding star-parties? Those who make unsolicited private donations?
I've always assumed that volunteer work is simply that. Volunteer. People do public service for the warm fuzzy, not for any kind of material compensation.
I think Ziggy has a valid point.
