The reason I used CFT is because the only actual information I have is from the flights I have made. If Patrick wanted to go even faster he could rent a small jet, or at least a Lancair, but my plane is a Piper Cherokee, and is the only plane I've made the flight in. Flying to Salt Lake from Greenlee County is probably slightly farther than from any of the airports around Tucson because you have veer west to get to Salt Lake, so it would probably be even more practical for Patrick to commute to Tucson than it would be if he took a job at the Mt. Graham Observatory. On 1/8/2014 3:29 PM, Brent Watson wrote:
He would be better off flying into RYN (Ryan) and getting a 182. That time is only 3:50 (no wind). Of course, then he would need to not be in a partnership. Best enroute fuel price is U14 (Nephi). Long range tanks should allow that trip without fueling. CFT is Greenly County, AZ. That's 125 miles northeast of Tucson.

It only takes about 5.5 to 6 hours to fly from CFT to Salt Lake #2 (and that's chronological time including the gas stop at Page). It would be a similar time or maybe less to fly between Toele or SL#2 and the convenient airport near the observatory.

Gee, I could actually get paid to do what I'm already doing every clear night for free.
But the commute to and from Arizona would be a bit much. :)
