Computerized field de-rotators work because they are hooked into the rest of the drive system. The computer knows the exact alt-az coordinates of the scope, so it can feed the correct rotation rate to the de-rotator. BTW, meade also makes--or at least made--a derotator for their smaller LX200's. The only consumer installable drive system that has field de-rotator support that I know of is Mel Bartels' system.
