Sorry to jump in so late in the conversation. I'm doing the May 10th Star Party at Arches and I will be joined by a couple of park rangers who have initiated a night skies program within Arches & Canyonlands. They'll have a couple of telescopes of their own. To my knowledge if the "Red Rock Astronomy" group (or person) shows up they'll be volunteering just like the rest of us. The Star Party is being promoted by the local "Friends of Arches & Canyonlands" volunteer group and they're advertising it in Moab area media. It's also being promoted by the Moab Information Center. We don't really know how many people to expect, so I'm just putting the word out to Salt Lake area amateur astronomers in case any of you are interested in participating. We'll begin around sundown (~8:30) on the 10th at the Panorama Point viewing area, located about 12 miles into the park. Panorama Point is not a campsite, and the nearest restrooms are about a mile down the road. I have no say in the availability of camping spots. You may be right, Erik, on the other hand, are you certain he doesn't have a permit also? Or of his tax status?
On the surface, I admit that it sounds a bit opportunistic (for want of a better word), but I can't draw a firm conclusion until I know more about his situation. If SLAS did show up and offered for free what he's charging for, he might pack-up and find a different street corner, so to speak. On Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 1:10 PM, <erikhansen@thebluezone.net> wrote:
and SLAS has a state permit to do so and has not asked other organizations to help with them.
don't see the analogy here. If he has gotten the park service to pay him, then more power to him, let him do it without SLAS. SLAS has accepted donations for the group, not individual profit.
Red Rock Astronomers should not be included in the same listings as SLAS.
I would point out that SLAS has on occassion accepted "donations" for
holding star parties for various groups, so without resorting to semantic gymnastics, perhaps we live in a glass house...?

Pretty sure you cannot assume that for the advertised Arches event. If he is going to collect from the tourists then SLAS should not participate. Sequester was generally in the form delayed openings. Have you talked to them personally Ann?
Red Rock Astronomers seem misrepresented as an astronomy club.
